In Southeast Asia, thousands of children grow up in the heart of landfills. Sari is one of them, born in a dump near Jakarta, where girls are often married off as young as 15. Her childhood was spent sorting through waste with her parents, until the day a racket found in the trash opened up a new world to her: badminton. Wearing flip-flops, she played with other children, transforming a pile of waste into a playground.
Thanks to Bintang Kidul, which supports dozens of children in these same conditions, Sari discovered a safe environment, schooling, support, and sports. The association transforms the daily lives of these young people, offering opportunities that life seemed to have denied them.
Twelve years later, Sari is 20 years old, speaks three languages, and has just earned her diploma as a flight attendant. From the landfill to the airplane, her journey is brilliant proof that with the support of a collective, even the most precarious lives can be reinvented.
